Juhani Lagerstam and Laukko Manor were already famous for their horses in the 1970s. At around the beginning of the 1980s the idea was hatched of the large-scale breeding of trotting horses: Laukko horses. The celebrated stud farm is still thriving and owned by Erkki Lagerstam. Laukko is also known for its deer. In the 1930s Finnish emigrants in Minnesota decided to send seven white-tailed deer to their former homeland, to roam lands owned by the Haarlas known to be keen hunters. From there the deer spread to the nearby forests and all over Southern Finland. The Laukko deer is now the emblem of the region.
