Ancient splendour

The easy-to-navigate water routes were already attracting settlers to the verdant Laukko region as early as the Iron Age. The Viking-age weapons and jewellery found in the manor grounds indicate that their owners were enjoying a splendid way of life a thousand years ago.

Further reminders of Laukko’s ancient glory are the prehistoric burial sites in the grounds. As late as the 19th century there are said to have been enormous burial mounds on the estate, but they vanished as land was cleared for cultivation.

Likewise shrouded in history is the local chieftain Matti Kurck, reputed to have been the first owner of Laukko and the first Finnish hero mentioned by Zacharias Topelius in his “Boken om vårt land” (Book about our Country).
