Archaeologists at Laukko

In 1989-99 one of the biggest archaeological project in the Finnish manor houses was carried out at Laukko in collaboration with the National Board of Antiquities. The excavations mainly focused on the area around the medieval stone cellar beside the present manor house.

The original aim of the project directed by Dr Kari Uotila was to unearth traces of the large house that burnt down in 1704. Over the years the nature of the life led by the Kurcks at Laukko began to acquire equal importance.

The project findings were published in 2000 in a multidisciplinary collection of articles entitled “Vesilahden Laukko: Linna, kartano, koti” (Laukko at Vesilahti: Castle, Manor, Home). Visitors to Laukko Historicum can examine the exhibition of archaeological finds.
